To Kill A Mockingbird
To Kill A Mockingbird “ I’m little but I’m old.”( p. 7 ) says Dill when he first meets Jem and his sister Scout, the main character of the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Besides being little, Dill is many things that Jem and Scout are not. because he is different he brings much to his friendship with Jem and Scout. Their friendship is very valuable to all the three children and they all learn a Since Dill doesn’t live in Maycomb County ( where Jem and Scout live ) he has done some things that Jem and Scout. One thing he had done was go to picture shows and “ Dill had seen Dracula,” ( p. 7 ) Dill then retold the story of the picture to Jem and Scout who had never seen it. They were able to get a new perspective on it because of Dill. If it wasn’t for Dill, Jem and Scout would have never heard this new and more exciting version of Dracula that Jem said “ Sounded far better than the book.” ( p. 8 ) Another thing Dill brought to his relationship with Jem and Scout was his great talent for acting. many an afternoon were spent reenacting books read by Jem or picture shows seen by Dill. Without Dill, Jem and Scout reenactments of Tarzan, The Rover Boys and Tom Swift would have been incomplete. “ Dill was a villain’s villain; he could get into any part assigned him and appear tall if height was part of the devilry required.” ( p. 39) Acting wasn’t the only thing that Dill brought to the friendship between himself, Jem and Scout. Dill’s “ ... head teemed with eccentric plans, strange longings and quaint fancies.” ( p. 8 ) One of his eccentric plans was to give Boo Radley a note. Jem and Scout were not very adventurous and would have never dreamed of doing any thing like that on their own. But, with Dill there they were willing to try. Also Jem would have never gone anywhere near the Radley house if it weren’t for Dill, for it was Dill’s dare which made Jem touch the Radley house. Jem and Scout weren’t the only ones who gained things from the relationship. Dill learned a lot too. Jem and Scout told Dill all about Boo Radley and without this information some of their adventures would have never occurred. Jem also taught Dill how to swim and about what Atticus was doing during the trial of Tom Robinson. “ Dill leaned across me and asked Jem what Atticus was doing.” (p. 190) Jem and Scout helped Dill as good friends should when he ran away and also helped him come to terms Dill was a good and true friend to Jem and Scout. All of them learned a lot from their relationship, weather it was about Boo Radley, acting, Tom Robinson’s trial or swimming. Most importantly they gad fun leaning together and carrying out their eccentric plans. “ ... the summer Dill came to us. “ (p. 6) was the begging of a beautiful friendship. Bibliography:
