The Evergreen State No Peace Here
The Evergreen State No Peace Here In a state known for its apples, and nicknamed the “Evergreen State” looms a bitter battle between Democrat Incumbent Senator Patty Murray and Representative Linda Smith (Republican) for the only U.S. Senate seat open in the state of Washington. Washington has been historically Democratic for years. But changes in the state’s economy and a low amount of challengers have led to political instability in the Evergreen State. In recent times, while the state has voted Democratic in the last three presidential elections, Washington voted Republican for president in the previous elections in the 1970’s and 1980’s. A Democrat has held the governor’s mansion since 1984. Control in the Senate, House, and state legislature is split. In 1994, Washington’s House delegation shifted more than any other state’s, with six of nine seats moving from Democrats to Republican. Conservative Republicans maintained their dominance in these same races in 1996. Democratic Sen. Patty Murray is one of three women elected in 1992 (“The Year of the Woman”) who is seeking re-election this year. Murray ran her campaign in 1992 with the slogan “Mom in tennis shoes.” Born on October 11th, 1950, Sen. Murray began her bout in politics as an educator running for the Shoreline School Board. She won the position and was on the school board from 1983-1989. Sen. Murray ran and won the Washington State Senate seat from 1989-1993. Sen. Patty Murray had an easy 54-46 percent win in 1992, but remains a top Republican target. The challenger, Rep. Linda Smith (Rep.), has gathered an army of grass-roots supporters who favor her pro-life and anti-tax record. Recent polling suggests that moderate Republicans generally are rallying behind Smith, giving her a chance of over-taking Murray, who still remains in front. Known as a tireless campaigner, Smith emphasizes her own populism and voted against the GOP tax cut proposal so that she could demonstrate her commitment to Social Security. Born on July 16th, 1950, Linda Smith rose from a petty tax consultant job to win her first political seat in the Washington House of Representatives from 1983-87 and then the Washington Senate from 1987-1995. As for the state make-up in comparison to political leverage: the governor is a democrat (and became the first governor in the U.S. with a Chinese descent), one Democrat and one Republican hold the two U.S. Senate seats, and there are three Democrats to the six Republicans holding the U.S. House of Representatives seats. For this year’s election, twenty-four Senate seats are up and all ninety-eight House of Representative seats are up for grabs. The demographic of the state’s 4,115,000 voting age population is White: 89.9%, African American: 2.8%, Asian: 4.1%, Native American: 1.4%, Hispanic: 3.6%, and Undeclared: 1.9% which gives the “Chinook State” a valued 11 electoral votes. The main issues for Sen. Patty Murray is education, environment, the Hanford Reach, trade, Veterans, and the right for women to choose an abortion. Whether it was providing much needed funds for teacher training or protecting billions for education in the national budget, Senator Murray has been an outspoken advocate for Washington State's students, parents and From the Hanford Reach to the Pacific Coast Senator Murray has an outstanding record protecting Washington State's unique natural heritage. The Hanford Reach There are only 50 miles of the Columbia River that flow free and wild. Senator Murray has introduced legislation to ensure the Hanford Reach remains unmarred by unwise development. Washington State benefits both from its geographical location and the diversity of its products. From the high technology & manufacturing industries of the Puget Sound area to the agricultural products of Central & Eastern Washington, Senator Murray knows how vital trade is to our state. The daughter of a World War II combat veteran and the first woman ever to sit on the United States Senate Veteran's Affairs Committee, Senator Murray has been named "1998 Legislator of the Year" by the Vietnam Veterans Association for her leadership on Veterans issues. Linda Smith has her grass-roots policy deeply imbedded within her platform. Linda Smith will fight for a smaller, more accountable government that empowers our Linda Smith will protect our commitments to our older neighbors, our nation’s veterans and our children. Linda Smith will remain steadfast in her refusal to accept special interests checks from lobbyists. Linda Smith will continue to work for transportation solutions for Washington State. Linda Smith will be a strong voice for our agriculture communities. Linda Smith will balance economic interests, property rights, and environmental As anyone can clearly see, these two candidates have taken the “middle ground” in the hopes of keeping or gaining the treasured U.S. Senate seat. Although many analysts state that this race will be close, I believe that the incumbent Patty Murray will win due to her state’s prosperity and overall high job approval. Bibliography:
