Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc, Jeanne d'Arc in French, was born in 1412. She was a French peasant in the town Domrey. Joan was also a very religious person. She was very religious all of her life. When she was thirteen years old she believed she heard heavenly voices. In 1429 she claims that the "voices" told her to help the Dauphin, soon to be Charles VII of France. Joan did convince him that she was sent by god to save France. Some say the reason Charles VII was so convinced is because Saint Michael showed himself. On May 8, 1429, Joan of Arc won the battle at Orleans that had been besieged by the English. Before she started attacking the English forts, that surrender Orleans, Joan made sure that all of those who live in Orleans had food, so they did not starve. The people of Orleans were grateful. After she won that battle she truly believed that she might be the Maid that the great Wizard Merlin had talk about in his prophecy.Joan of Arc had lead an army and attacked the English at Compiegne, which is near Paris. She was captured by Burgundian soldiers and was sold to their allies, the English. There are rumors that she was treated very well, but some rumors say she was treated poorly. Joan of Arc died in 1431 at the age of 19. She was burned at the stake as a relapsed heretic in the Old Market Square at Rouen. Some say she asked for a crucifix to be held at her eye level as she was burning.Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431 as a relapsed heretic. Twenty-five years after she was burned, the church retried her case, and she was found innocent. Joan was canonized a saint in 1920. Joan of Arc's traditional feast day is May 30.
