INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE
INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE I cannot speak for all, but I find watching the movie much more interesting than reading the book. I find that the movie paints a perfect picture well on the other hand reading the book you have to let your imagination take over and create images in your head of what might the scene look like. “Interview with the Vampire” was a well-written book and a well developed movie after reading the book and the watching the movie I found the movie much more entertaining then reading the book. In this essay you will read on how the setting, plot and the characters were created in the movie and in the book and their similarities. I found that the setting in the movie and in the book were the things that had the most similarities. Both the movie and the book are very close when it comes to the setting, and so are most of the scenes throughout the book and the movie. The setting in the movie takes place in New Orleans and in the gorgeous city of Paris. The old English style of clothing was brought into the movie and it was very appropriate for the film. In the file Cruise and Pitt had a very long hair style which fit with the time period perfectly. The Director Neil Jordan tried to capture very dark, passionate world which would fit the vampire environment. Most of the scenes are shot during the very cold dark night. I think that the Director Neil Jordan did I great job creating most of the scenes in the movie, but I think that the veins protruding on the face were a bit too much, the blue tint looked very unnatural, and also some of the scenes were taken a bit took fore, the bloody scenes were way to graphic and looked very unreal. But other then that I found the movie entertaining and funny at some point of the movie. For example their was a time in the movie when Claudia develops an insatiable thirst for blood and kills her piano teacher in the middle of a lesson, Lestat reprimands her, "What did I tell you?" "Never in the house," she says meekly. In the novel the setting also takes place in New Orleans and in Paris. The novel starts off with a young boy interviewing a vampire named Louis and fades off and on onto story scenes that Louis is telling to the young boy. Basically to say the settings in the movie and book are about the same. The writer Anne Rice also does a great job creating a vampire environment. But she doesn’t do as great of a job capturing the graphic bloody violence scenes as they are captured in the film. Even though the settings were very similar, I still found the movie much more entertaining to watch. The film has a sense of humor that the book never even alluded to. Some scenes are unchanged in the movie from the book. That’s why I found that the plot in the movie was exactly as it was in the book. There is a scene where Louis first feeds off of Claudia and her transformation, and there is also a scene at the Theatre de Vampires are practically word for word from the book. There is a scene where Claudia sleeps in Louis' coffin this also accurse in the movie. There is also a scene where Lestat locks a whore in a coffin which also accurse in the movie but much more entertaining to watch then read. Also, Lestat's two demises are the same, though there is no vampire musician who accompanies Lestat at that point in the book. Though the line about "I know someone who would make a better vampire than you is still there." There are also fore more scenes that are the same. I also found that the plot in the movie and the plot in the book occur at the same time. The plot occurs when, Louis and Claudia a 6-year-old girl decide to kill their creator, Leastat and move to Paris. Lestat loved the blood of man and women. He would bite, and then kill. Louis hated that. He survived on rats and chickens. Louis made one bite on a human that he regretted. It was a little girl, Claudia. He left her to die. Lestat saw this and decided that he would not let Louis ever forget this. He took her into their house and gave Louis the choice to let her die or convert her. Louise begin softhearted, he couldn’t watch her die. “You must do as I tell you to get well. And then, in the pause that followed, I came to my senses. I realized what he was doing, that he had cut his wrist and given it to her and she was drinking” PG 92 (The conversion of the little girl to a vampire.) This scene is almost identical in the movie and in the book. The characters where greatly developed in the book and wonderfully performed in the film. In the movie the interviewer who is no longer a teenager boy but a 25-year-old man is played by Christan Slater. In the movie he had short brown hair, he looked very thin and dressed in very modern close. But in the book the interview is boy, no description of the boy was given. The vampire who is being interview by Christan Slater is Louis de Pointe du Lac played by Brat Pitt. In the movie Louis appeared very tall, with long dark hair, he also dressed in old English style clothing. In the book Louis is 25 and described as, “Utterly white and smooth, as if he were sculpted from bleached bone, and his face was as seemingly inanimate as a statue, except for two brilliant green eyes” PG 4 Tom Cruise plays Lestat who made Louis and Claudia vampires. In the movie he appears very cold and dark, so sum it up he appeared very dead. In the movie Lestat had very long dark hair with a white face to go with it he also had very dark eyes that you do not want to look into. Lestat also dress in old English style clothing to go along with the time phase. In the book Lestat is described as, “A tall fair-skinned man wih a mass of blond hair and a graceful, almost feline quality to his movements.” PG 13 And finally the 6-year-old girl who was adapted into their lives as their sister is Claudia played by Kirstein Dunst. In the movie Claudia had very long curly blond hair and dark blue eyes. She also dressed in English old Style closing to go along with the time period. In the book Claudia is described as, “She had a voice equal to her physical beauty, clear like a little silver bell. It was sensual. Se was sensual. Her eyes were as wide and clear as Babette’s.” PG 93 In conclusion, “Interview With The Vampire” has a very dark and morbid tone, with a lot of black humor. The look back through time was very well done. Even though I find the movie much more entertaining, don’t take my word for it, I think that you should give the book a chance as well and not just go straight to the movie, because Anne Rice dose a great job on this book. The sets and the atmosphere for all of the various time periods were authentic. If you're interested in vampires and/or history you should give “Interview With The Vampire” a chance.
