The amendment was first proposed to congress in 1878, however it wasn’t ratified until August 18, 1920. The right for women to vote was the main part of the women’s suffrage during the early 1900’s. Leaders such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, organized many of the parades, protests, and demonstrations across the nation to bring attention to the issue. However a few states had already allowed women the right to vote in their own constitution, but women wanted it written in the US Constitution. Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah were among the first states to write it in their constitution, however it had little effect on the status of women to vote in other states. In 1911 an intense campaign helped California jump on the bandwagon in the movement. Finally in 1918 President Woodrow Wilson announced his support of the nineteenth amendment to guarantee women’s right to vote, after being considered for 40 years. On May 21, 1919 the House of Representatives passed the amendment, and 2 weeks after that the Senate followed. With Tennessee becoming the 36th state to ratify the amendment. (Due to there being only 48 states in 1920.) The 19th amendment jumped its final hurdle to be created on August 18, 1920, receiving ¾’s of the states.
