The constraints on choice are not a matter of economics alone, but reflect a far deeper bias against parenting. Modern industrial society has isolated the childbearing role within the nuclear family. When people become parents in our society, they are expected to take on enormous financial, emotional, and physical burden, and to do so essentially alone. They are essentially given the message that they are on their own, that they must not expect to take care of them (McDonnell 72).
