welfare
welfare Welfare is an issue that affects us all in some way or another. Whether we are paying for it out of our own pockets with taxes or we are the ones who are benefiting from it. Too many of us wish that something should be done dealing with the welfare system. So many people are on welfare. If you were to look back at all of those who are on welfare, then you would be able to see the variety of people. There are those who are really in need of financial help. Then there are those who desperately take advantage of the system. They are the one’s who have made some many people want to change the welfare system. Each month recipients are given a check and based on the number of children in the family and the income the parent or parents bring in. Many of these recipients are young single mothers who continue to live off the state. Knowing that they do not have to pay for anything, they keep on having children, the more the kids the more the cash flow. So we as a state our financial supporting children. On the other hand, there are those who have a household of two parents who both work and still are not able to make ends meet. They are the ones who are not taking the system for granted. They are grateful that there is other help around. However, it is sad that those who are not so grateful are ruining the system. In order to be on welfare, guidelines are slowly changing. I have learned from the news and the paper that you are only allowed to be on welfare for a certain period of time, which I believe to be 2 years. In that two-year period, you are required to go and find a job. There are classes that are offered to teach those how to prepare for and interview, and some job skills that can improve their chances of getting and keeping a job. I hope that this plan will work in order to get more and more people off welfare. We have let those on welfare take advantage of the system for too long now. Many people feel different about our welfare system. Some think that we are not helping them enough. The media likes to play the role of placing sides on this issue. Newspapers, magazine articles and documentaries take about different issues involving welfare. They like to pinpoint different aspects of it all. Like trying to focus on how our employment system does not offer the right benefits and not paying enough for these parents to live and support their children. Children play a very important factor; they are the innocent and we, as American citizens should do anything to help them live a life full of necessities. Roaming through the newspapers, I seemed to have found many articles dealing with the issue of welfare. ARTICLE ONE: CHRIS DOESN’T KNOW ABOUT CALWORKS…but he does know not to ask for what he can’t have. This article focuses on children who are on welfare. Chris Helton a 9 year old boy of Stockton is a child of 3 who is on welfare. It talks about him, and the struggles of his family and how their lifestyle isn’t the best but it is something that they beginning forced to do. But all that is changing due to the to requirements of a new welfare system. The new welfare law will still pay for child care for the children while the mother while Kathy is at Job Club. This is where they learn to find a job by learning job skills. Even after she gets a job they will continue to pay for it if she doesn’t earn more than 75 percent of the state’s median income $17,094. How does CalWORKS work: Adults will face a five – year lifetime for receiving aid. They have 18 to 24 months to find work, once they finish a four week Job Club. After Job Club, adults must either get a job or demonstrate they are looking for one. If a job is not found by the 18 or 24 month deadline, adults must earn their welfare checks by working in “ community services “ jobs arranged by the county. Recipients who fail to meet job – search requirements face sanctions by having the adult’s share of welfare grant eliminated and having the remaining aid distributed in the form of rent/utility vouchers. Otherwise, you’ll still receive the vouchers or cash if you meet the requirements. All these are recent changes that hopefully will change status on those who are on welfare. ARTICLE TWO: GET A JOB QUICK MIND STE PREVAILS OVER GETTING EDUCATION. This article talks about how in order to receive a good paying job you need to attend school. Going through a four week labor class won’t get you to far besides working at some fast food restaurant which won’t able you to make enough money to live off. These reciepents are being forced to hurry and get a job fast. They need to get jobs that make $10 an hour. In order to do that you need to go to school. Delta College offers programs that give short term classes for students who are on welfare and also provide free child care for their children. But a lot of people are either attending some further education, or they start but end up having to quit because not enough time is given. Should our system allow for those who decide to get an education, a longer span to go out and get a job? This is what the question that so many who are wanting to get a good job, by going to school want to know. However, what we need to realize that too many young teens are getting on welfare each day. As young as 14 or 15 year olds is having babies when they are babies themselves. Sex education needs to start at home and not rely on schools to do that. We seem to always want to blame society for the mistakes that these teenagers enco Bibliography: none
