Effects of Steroids on the Human body
Effects of Steroids on the Human body Steroids are derivatives of the male hormone testosterone, for example, young body builders who use them to promote tissue growth endure arduous workouts routinely flood their bodies with one hundred times the testosterone they produce naturally. Steroids have many effects on the human body. Not only do steroids affect the muscles but can also do damage to the sex organs and the nervous system, including the brain. “Even a brief use of such drugs can have permanent affects on a child whose brain and body are still developing,” warns Neil Carolan who is considered an expert in the field (Schroff 1).Many who use the drug also suffer from liver inflammation, ligament and joint damage, facial hair growth, acne, and occasional problems with tumors (Pear 3).There are a number more side affects of steroids of all kinds such as, Deeper voices, heart problems, kidney disease, tendons become brittle and break easily. Steroids can also keep a persons bones from developing completely causing more breaks and sprains (Schroff 4). The use of steroids can also cause psychological damage to a person. “Juicers” as they are referred, often enjoy a feeling of invincibility and euphoria. But along with the sensation they can also become irritable quickly and feel sudden urges to fight. Outburst like these occur so often they have a name now, “roid rages”. In a recent study by Harvard researchers, one eighth of the steroid users suffer from “bodybuilder’s psychosis”, displaying such signs of mental illness as delusions and paranoia. Many steroid users are now ending up in prison for vandalism, assault, and even murder that attorneys are starting to call on the “experts” to testify about the drugs effects (Schroff 2). A recent study by National Institute on Drug Abuse indicates that steroid use by all high school students, are increasing. Some 6% of high school students have used steroids. But who knows how many more will try them? ( Ungerlieder 1). There are now many programs focusing specifically on students and steroid use. On such program is called ATLAS. “Atlas is a very unique approach to dealing with the problem of steroid use among students,” Goldberg said (New 1). Compared to students who were not exposed to the ATLAS program, ATLAS participants had increasing understanding of the drug and it’s effects. They also displayed a greater belief in their selves, improved drug refusal skills, and improved nutrition and exercise behaviors and reduced intentions to use steroids (New 2). In conclusion I would like to point out, again, the effects of steroids. These things can mess a person up causing problems with your organs, sexual organs, nervous system, outward appearance, and of course your hormone balances. I encourage everyone not to use such drugs and to work for everything that you want to gain. You will be better off for it in the end. Bibliography:
