Women and men seen on television and in magazines set unrealistic bodily proportions compared to the average person. They create a pressure to be very thin, beautiful, and as perfect as possible. Nash states, both the need for cosmetic surgery and anorexia are based on a drive for perfection and control (74). This is directly related to the pressures of teens to be popular. Many people especially teens would like to change their looks to fit in, or to cease taunting and teasing. Nash illustrated when men have cosmetic surgery they endure high psychological impact and social pressure. These social pressures are higher than womens are because these types of procedures are not as acceptable for men (75). The reversing of role of men and women in the past decade has brought on much change. Women have taken on careers and men have become more aware and sensitive to their physical appearance. Reasons that men have the surgery are similar to women. They want to keep the young look for professional careers, and jobs, such as models and actors, that demand good looks, and sometimes they just need a boost in their self-confidence.Some of the reconstructive surgeries that are performed are for reason other than beautification. The rebuilding of amputated or deformed arms or legs; repairing cleft lips, badly-formed noses and ears; and reconstructing a breast after mastectomy (Heckaman and Henry 5) include some health related surgeries.
