owers. After the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of the Midway, the Japanese Navy never recovered. Through consistent war efforts, by 1944, Germanys defeat seemed imminent. Japan continued to fight however and in 1945, two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As the war ended, over 55 million lives were lost. The USSR suffered nearly 20 million of the 55 million casualties. Even sadder was the fact that over 5 million Jews were killed in the Holocaust. As a result of World War II, Japan, Britain, France, and Germany ceased to remain dominant military powers in the world leaving only the United States and the USSR to battle for the dominant world power status.The emergence of the United States as a world power throughout these three wars is of significant continuity. By gaining land, economic, political, and military power from the Spanish-American War, the United States emerged as a force to be respected and feared. This led up to the United States important stance regarding its neutrality throughout much of World War I. Through entering WWI in 1917, the United States had strengthened its economy and was able to play an influential role in the termination of the war and its negotiations thereafter. The negotiations, namely the Versailles Treaty, created an enormous amount of anger in Germany, which fueled Hitler and his causes. Also, the huge amount of money spent on the war created an economic disaster in the 30s. The failure of the Allied powers to enforce the Versailles Treaty also allowed Germany to strengthen its military and economic powers. Thus, World War II became a direct result of the first world war. Throughout these wars, the United States developed its social, economic, diplomatic, and cultural views.
