lphia.When Benedict Arnold joined the British army as a brigadier general, he led attacks against his former comrades and neighbors. He conducted raids in Virginia along the James River, and later to Petersburg. Arnold then raided New London, Connecticut, where he burned more than 150 buildings and his troops massacred the American militia and Fort Griswold, near New London. In 1781 he and his family sailed to London, there he advised British officials on the conduct of war. Because of his shady past and the Revolution?s military conclusion he was banned from active military service in the British Army.
