Cuban Missle Crisis

f Cuba, but in return the United States agreed to end the navel blockade and not invade the island of Cuba.In a similar situation, only many years before hand, Thomas Jefferson was confronted with an attack on America; but this time it was from the Pasha of Tripoli. In 1798 was the French Crisis when Americans were screaming "Millions for defense, but not one penny for tribute!", twenty-six barrels of blackmail dollars were being shipped to piratical Algiers. At this time war began to seem cheaper than peace. But then the show down came in1801 when the Pasha of Tripoli became dissatisfied with the amount of protection money he was receiving from the United States, and informally declared war on the U.S. Jefferson was suddenly faced with a challenge that he as a pacifist and noninterventionist had to face up to and intervene. Reluctantly he sent forth the infant navy to the shores of Tripoli where they fought for four years . After four long years Jefferson finally succeeded in exerting a treaty of peace in the year 1805, secured at the bargain price of sixty-thousand dollars. Had Jefferson been President in the year 1962 and been faced with the same situation he would not have brought nuclear was into the picture. Jefferson was not a large financial supporter of the armed forces, nor a supporter of war and violence. In 1801 he was forced by critical circumstances to defend the country by means of war. Had it been the Cuban Missile Crisis with Khrushchev instead of the Pasha of Tripoli Jefferson would have tried negations first. As stated earlier it was with reluctance that he sent the infant navy after war had been declared, therefor had it been Cuba war would have been a extreme last resort and nuclear war would not even have been an option.
