Eisenhower These two documents are similar in the ways that they are both pleading for peace Dwight D. Eisenhower states in his farewell address that as a private citizen he would never stop trying to help America advance along the road to peace. Allen Ginsberg states in his poem ³America², ³America you donıt really want to go to war. America itıs them damn Russians.² Alan Ginsberg also states in his poem ³There must be some other way to settle this argument² meaning some way other than war. Eisenhower was born in Texas and raised in a conservative military family. He excelled in sports and many other things. Eisenhower was a war hero and a commanding general of victorious forces in Europe during world war 2. During his two terms he worked to obtain a truce in Korea and worked to ease the tensions in the cold war. Alan Ginsberg was born in Newark N.J. and attended the Columbia University and was expelled. Ginsberg was brought up in an immigrant Jewish family. His father was a teacher and a poet and his mother had a history of mental problems. He started experimenting with mind altering drugs at a young age and began writing poems about using them. He was a leading figure in the Beet generation. His poems celebrated drugs and homosexuality. Many of his poems were thought to be obscene and some were even confiscated because it was considered obscene and indecent. Ginsberg studied under Guruıs and Zen Masters in the sixties. He was raised with very liberal ideas. He states in his poem that his mother took him to communist meetings and they were pleasant, the people were angelic and friendly and that he didnıt regret being a communist when he was young. These two pieces of writing are different because Eisenhower is telling what he has done to help. He criticizes what America does but does not offer to help in any way. He states ³itıs true I do not want to join the army.² Ginsberg believed in spontaneity and just doing thing for the moment whereas Eisenhower believes in being ready for what may come makes a nation stronger. The completely different upbringing relates to the different views each man has. Eisenhower being very conservative and Ginsberg being just the opposite, very liberal. Yet through all the different views they have they still want the same for there country. Neither man wants to go to war, they both want piece. Eisenhower helps in the change where Ginsberg just states that there is a problem and criticizes everyone who has any thing to do with it. Eisenhower believed that having a strong military would help to stay away from war and brought America into the atomic and air superiority. Eisenhower wanted to be strong in technologies in the military but he knew military spending would be a burden in America if the military was huge. While he was in office the military spending fell 17%. Eisenhower and Ginsberg both cared about the people in general and wanted awareness so people weren't selfish to the needs of other people. It is Ironic that the two different upbringing's can form to have the same ideas. Ginsberg refers to Henry Ford and Eisenhower refers to inventors which are the same. They both believed that America should go back to inventors. They believed that to much federal money was being spent on scientists that did nothing. These pieces relate to chapter 27 because it goes through and talks a lot about Eisenhower and the things he thought and accomplished. This chapter also talks about Ginsberg and his life and beliefs. It shows similarities and differences in what they each believe. The chapter states that from both the left and the right different writers express anger power and fear the American mass media. Both sides felt traditional standards would be thrown out. They blamed the mass media for degrading the quality of American life. Ginsberg also states in his poem as a liberal ³Are you going to let your emotional life be run by Time Magazine?² So he believes the same things. Both the liberals and the conservatives did not want the people to believe was the mass media told them. Even thought these two men were raised in completely different atmospheres and there beliefs are an the far right and the far left they still come together with wanting the same things for their country and the mass people in it. They want piece and for people to believe what is true not what they see through the mass media's eyes. These two documents are similar in the ways that they are both pleading for peace Dwight D.
