en it did was because of the general population’s anxiety and insecurity about the future under apartheid. Mandela showed his knowledge of the people’s feelings when he stated: “I knew that many people, particularly the minorities, whites, Coloureds, and Indians, would be feeling anxious about the future and I wanted them to feel secure.” (Mandela, pp. 540) The only way to ease their anxiety was liberation, the ending of apartheid. The ending of apartheid came when South African apprehension peaked. In conclusion, the coinciding events of external countries fighting white minority rule, the partial unification of the PAC and ANC in prison, and the eventual unification of those organizations outside of the prison, compiled on top of the South African people’s insecurity and anxiety reaching its pinnacle caused apartheid to end when it did. If these events did not happen in the same time frame, the same result may not have occurred. But, the coincidence of each of these individual events led to the cumulative effect of an end to apartheid. ...
