Cyrus always had a powerful army too, there was never any lack of people who were willing to risk their lives when they thought that Cyrus would get to know of it (Xenophon, 41). Consequently it was said that Cyrus got the best officers for any kind of job (Xenophon, 41). He was very generous to the friends he held dear to him. When doing favors for friends he considered what each individual was like and what, to his knowledge, he needed most (Xenophon, 41). This showed he cared about his friends. Cyrus picked very reliable people, For when he died every one of his friends and table-companions died fighting for him (Xenophon, 41). Overall, people wanted to please Cyrus. His subordinates were not scared by harsh punishments into doing their duty, yet motivated to do it very well. These combinations of Cyruss personality made him a person people wanted to impress and gain respect from.Emporor Tai-tsung also had unique qualities which made him a successful leader. In Tai-tsungs On the Art of Government, he places a colossal emphasis on speaking ones mind. Tai-tsung is not a man focused on himself and his power, yet he is focused on the well being of the country and the people. He is not a ruler who wants things done his way or no way, rather Tai-tsung wants every advisor to tell him exactly what he thinks about the situation. His beliefs about his advisors duties are observed when he says, I am asking you gentlemen to speak candidly on matters that you believe are most important to the well-being of the nation, even though the opinion you express may not coincide with my own. Needless to say, there will be no penalty ...
