A referral to the hospital for an in-patient program could also help the user. Some people who have tried to get off of heroin and have failed, may need more serious help. Another way of breaking the user from the addiction of heroin is to give the user a long-term prescription of methadone (“Drugs Card…”). Methadone is a prescription that is in liquid form to drink. It lasts 36 hours and is much cheaper than heroin. Methadone is also addicting if taken daily (United Kingdom).The physical drug use of any substance is merely a symptom of the disease of addiction. The disease of addiction is noted as a three-fold disease: mental, spiritual, and physical. Once the user’s drug use has stopped, he/she needs to discover the mental and spiritual aspects of the disease. Putting down the drug is just the start of the recovery process. Research has proven that the most affective remedy to a drug addiction has been regular participation in a 12-step recovery program. It is suggested that the user attends regular 12-step meetings. The individual needs to receive help from a sponsor. The individual then becomes active in the fellowship, and most importantly, gains knowledge and guidance through and of the 12-steps (Heft Personal Interview).Heroin is a drug that must be taken extremely seriously.
