der of Germany. President Truman said in his address to the world that Americans should "refrain from celebrating [about the victory] and dedicate themselves to what lies [ahead]." Some Americans ignored his request by having crowds fill Times Square and having impromptu parades. Others realized the struggle ahead and had prayer services and rejoiced in quiet praising (Skylighter, www.strandlab.com/veday/). The celebration was not contained to just Americans. Many people flooded the streets of London (Vad Vashem). In fact, the whole world seemed to go crazy with parties and celebrations. In London there were marching bands where the cheering and flag waving was never ending (Fletcher, Tom). Prime Minister Winston Churchill even authorized the two-day celebration in London (Skylighter www.strandlab.com/veday/).After May 8, 1945, there were many Jews that survived the concentration camps and had nowhere to go and they didn’t want to return to their homes. Many of the survivors got to see their liberation, but were unfortunately so thin and near death that they died within days and weeks (Rosenberg, Matt, http://geography.about.com/library/weekly/aa051898.htm). Normal life could never be normal because survivors were stripped of their personal belongings as well as their will to live. They would always wonder whether they were survivors at all (Ayer, Eleanor, p. 17). After the surrender the survivors were still treated as prisoners and President Truman sent Earl G. Harrison to investigate. He stated that "Jews [are still being treated] as the Nazis treated them". It was Harrison’s recommendation that Jews be allowed to enter Palestine (Rosenberg, Matt, http://geography.about.com/library/weekly/aa051898.htm). Many people struggled to understand the torment of the Nazis to the Jews.
