He kept hope for the citizens of the United States by telling them things were going to get better, when they really were not. Hoover also did not understand what the people were going through, while he lived in luxury of the White House. After the Great Depression began, and people were left jobless, with little hope of ever getting their normal lives back, Hoover insisted to the people that the hard times would soon end, and that they {the citizens} had nothing to worry about. At first they listened, but soon the Americans were becoming angry and discouraged with their situation. People were forced to live on the streets in car pieces or cardboard boxes. When a large number of these homes were in one area, the came to be called “Hoovervilles.” Americans placed the blame of their predicament on the President, and soon protested in front of the White House. Hoover became angry and afraid of all the extra people around the White House, and put the police on 24 hour a day guard of it. The people were ordered to leave, so they began to fight with the police forces. Officers and citizens were shot, and rioting broke out. Hoover had Federal troop sent in, and they were told to use force if necessary. Hoover considered the defense a great success. Hoover could not find a legitimate reason to give into their requests. He declared that it was not the government’s responsibility to give relief to its citizens, believing that once having started this practice, it would never end. Hoover lost the following election to Franklin Roosevelt because F.D.R understood what the people were going through, and Hoover did not. He would not change his views on the government giving out aid and relief to the public. Although Hoover was famous before his presidency, that was all lost when he failed to cope with the Great Depression. Bibliography: Word Count: 339
