Joe McCarthy
Joe McCarthy When Newspaper headlines like “Plan Wartime Roundup of 4,000 reds” and “Einstein Red Fakers Should be Deported” it is hard to ignore the hysteria surrounding the evil shadow of Communists in government. The Soviet Union looms as a powerful aggressor, constantly consolidating on Easter European nations and even experimenting with the atomic bomb. While the Presidential Administration have been most successful in holding back the advancement of Communism, it is difficult to completely defeat these Reds with spies infiltrating our government and nuclear projects. One man who has been productive in exposing Communist sympathizers in the United States government is Senator Joe McCarthy. In a recent interview with Senator McCarthy, head of the California State Senate Committee on Un-American Activities, I was able to gain knowledge of the strategies used by the committee in “discovering” Communist government members. McCarthy defines the Communist front as “an organization or publication created or captured by the Communists to do the parties work in special fields.” These fronts are said to be Communism’s greatest weapon in the country today. Many of the organizations being investigated as fronts have been rallying or signing petitions concerning peace, racial equality, education, and welfare. These “private organizations” are simply facades assumed by Communists groups organization primarily to accomplish the purposes of promoting the interests of the Soviet Union in the United States. Influenced by McCarthy’s investigations, President Truman has issued an executive order setting up “loyalty boards” to screen employees of executive departments. These screenings protect employees against any founded accusations of disloyalty to the government as well as preventing the infiltration of the disloyal. When McCarthy discussed the “Communists in the State Department” he stated that he had the names of 57 card-carrying members of the Communist Party. When accusations were held at disbelief McCarthy confirmed that he not only could but would give the 57 names of actual card-carrying Communists in the State Department of the United States if the Secretary of State called him and asked for them. I concluded my interview with Senator McCarthy be commenting on a job well done of ridding our government of Communists or those loyal to the Communist Party. Bibliography:
