Living Life In American Samoa
Living Life In American Samoa There are many different people living in this world with different culture diversity, and ways of making a living. American Samoans are one of these countries with different cultures and different ways of living. Living life in American Samoa is more unique from other countries. First of all, living life in American Samoa is easier then any other countries as far as I know. In American Samoa we get food free because the Samoans mainly live off the land. There is no house or rent payment. The people of Samoa grow their own plantation, go fishing and help out others. Everyone works together and helps out one another. When family is going through times of hardships the other families will step in to help, until they can survive and stand on their own feet. The cost of living is fair enough for people to live and survive. We buy many products from the store, such as our toiletries, canned good, paper goods and our clothes. But in other ways, families have no money to purchase things from the store so they borrow the money or the item from another family. Often times the storeowners will allow a family to write an I.O.U and pay it later when they have money. This is where the word “Fa’amolemole” comes in. This word simply means, “please” but it is one of the most powerful words in the Samoan language. With the word fa’amolemole a person can obtain or acquire anything that they wish. The Samoans use this word to borrow things from their neighbors, and returning it or merely replacing it when they are finished. The second most powerful word in the Samoan language is “Fa’afetai”. This word means, “thank you”. Because the Samoan people are of high respect a simple please or thank you can do a lot for a person. The most important thing about life in American Samoa as far as I know, is the way that people always loved each other and worked together as one family. So we have to ask ourselves why life in American Samoa is so easy? Because their cultures. Culture in Samoa is very different from other countries. We have to live with much pride in our own ancestors who brought out and formed what we collect now as our culture. So life in American Samoa is formed out of our culture. Another way that I thought life in American Samoa is so easy, is because we have to respect each other especially old people and other people that live in your own society. Secondly, we have to respect our own people with great honor and sincere. This means whatever old people tell us to do; we have to do it any way. Just the same thing likes our parents. Thirdly, we have to love everyone in our community. Share what you have with family or your friends. Some families in American Samoa show their values with other countries. This means show what they need and what they benefit for their life in the long run. So every life need is always based on culture. We build our own houses, because there are not that many bills to pay. So let us compare the living life in American Samoa and living life here in Hawaii. These two ways of living life was very, very different. Here in Hawaii we have to work in order to live and survive. But in American Samoa we don’t. In Hawaii if we don’t have jobs or work, we can’t plan to pay a lot of bills including house or apartment rent. So for the Samoans it is very difficult for us to adjust to the way of living here in Hawaii. We have to adjust our selves in many ways in order to live and survive. We have to work hard and come to school everyday in order to fulfill our goals for the future. For some of us it is more difficult to adjust our life here in Hawaii, because we are not used to it. But than we have to do it, if we want to survive. But let us see now days how many Samoan people are living here in Hawaii. I think that there are more Samoans living in Hawaii now then there are in American Samoa. They migrate to Hawaii in search of a better future or a brighter tomorrow not realizing that with the move comes a whole new lifestyle. I hope they take the time to really think about their life in American Samoa and how life would be if they moved to Hawaii or else where. Even though, living life in American Samoa is easy; there are still many people who leave to find a future. Life in American Samoa sometimes is poor but most times you get help from the other families. The Samoan people are known to take care of their extended families, which at times may be a hardship, but because they all work together it sometimes makes the load lighter. They also work together and help eachother out for the long run of life. Some people who come to Hawaii because of school find it hard and wish that they were back home. Other families relocate to give their children a better education and when they are done return to Samoa and live the life that their parents once lived. It is very easy to find jobs in Samoa; it is not what you know, but whom you know. So a degree really isn’t much help. Because although you have one but don’t know anyone working in the place that you desire to work you won’t get in. And then ofcourse all it takes is for a relative to know someone that works there and they can put in a good word for you. So in conclusion, American Samoa is easy for me to live. Easy life to struggle for and live with more pride as a Samoan. But here in Hawaii, I have to live with not how I see things but as to how things are suppose to be. And if I want things I have no choice to but to strive and earn it. Even if means going through struggles. This brings me to a saying that goes “struggle for good comes life in heaven”. No matter what happens we have to live with it. So it seems to me Samoa is a good place to live. This statement refers to those who never lived and visited American Samoa. But as far those who live and visited American Samoa it is a good place to live and have nice living in life. Samoa was named by one of the historians the “Island of Paradise”. Why? Because people were so good and have as good ways of making a living. We love our own island the way we live and I respect it with great honor in life as a human being. Bibliography:
