Immediately after his death, those who wanted to appoint a successor divided and this dilemma was an issue that would plague the Muslim world for years to come causing a divide still in existence today. When the caliphs were named, they would fulfill all the roles and duties that Muhammad had done when he was alive. Although Muhammad was the prophet and no one would experience his revelations, the caliph assumed all other religious and political responsibilities.The Buddha, although he too appointed no successor, did so for a reason. The Buddha taught his followers not to follow the man, but instead focus on his teachings. He stated that his teachings were all that was necessary to guide them after he passed on. Nevertheless, the Buddhists would eventually divide into two schools, each claiming to be the more authentic Buddhism.Clearly, numerous tactics and ideas were employed making Muhammad and the Buddha successful in their missions of spreading their religions. Due to similar feelings resulting from similar environments, both men were capable of comprehending the needs of everyone around them. They were able to understand what it is that society yearned for, and provided it. It is safe to say that Muhammad and the Buddha lived very different lifestyle up until the set out on their mission. While their early lives and religious epiphanies came in different forms, when they set off for their own individual reasons, Muhammads revelations and the Buddhas enlightenment (and subsequent appearance and dhamma) would be unparalleled in the power they would wield over those whom they came across. Each had a mission, both wanted to spread their religions, but Muhammad would act in accordance with his political ambitions.
