would have been capable of spreading the word and gaining as many followers as they did. After followers converted and surrendered to the lifestyle proscribed by these leaders, it was these same qualities that would retain the allegiance and loyalty. Without them, both leaders would have failed. Possessing the means and motivation of conversion, both set out in a manner that was similar in some ways, yet different in others. Each leaders mission throughout the remainder of his life would be a culmination of all aforementioned skills and knowledge, in addition to other skills and tactics that were necessary in certain situations. Muhammad and Buddha both sought to spread the word, but different goals and circumstances called for different actions.As Muhammad set out converting people to Islam, as previously mentioned, the Quran was the most successful means of exposing people to the legitimacy of Muhammads prophethood. In many cases, this would be the only tool necessary for Muhammads work, however, other religions sometimes posed a formidable threat to the seriousness with which the people would take Muhammad and his teachings. This is where Muhammad would truly shine as a political leader. Muhammad would successfully bring many tribes and citiesregardless of their religious orientationinto alliance through treaties that forced participants to recognize Muhammads religious role. It is very true that many times Muhammad had to resort to the battlefield to settle disputes and even executed his political and religious opponents, but only when necessary. Those who attempted to bring harm to Muhammad or compromise Islam as a religion were subject to the wrath of Muhammad and his army. The key to his success was that as he continued to gain more and more followers, his power was unquestioned, and after making that clear through decisive victories in battles, Muhammad would extend Islam to all whom he subjugated.
