The women in the north led lives full of constant work to help raise crops in the rocky mountain soil, just to survive. This led to a lower income and to a labor-intensive non-sociable life.Religion also played a part in this decline or improvement of a womens life. Religions like the Puritan theology of the Massachusetts Bay Colony promoted the keeping of women in domestic roles and away from the everyday interpretation of their religion. Through a strict set of laws not only women but men as well where held in check due to the idea that man is inherently evil. Other Religions like the Quakers of the Pennsylvania colony believed that no single person was a deliver of Gods word. They believed that men and women alike could be the vessels through which their god would and could speak to them. This led women to lead an active part in there religions and interpretations.Through the effects of all the above factors nationality, ethnic, religion, and location classification the women of the Colonial Period went through intervals of both growth and decline. This is only to be expected in a time when everything was changing sometimes for the good and sometimes the bad. It can not be said that the Colonial period was the worst time for women nor the best.
