Slaves Perspective

e 19 the poem or song talks about how they put the food of the table of the white man by raising the wheat and peeling the hog. The scraps that were left over was what they received for their hard work. They understood that what they were doing was only to benefit their owners. How did they feel about their families? They were very family oriented despite the fact that most of them were separated from their biological family. They developed families within the community they lived. The slaves had their own unions that supported and took care of the members within that union. These communities or unions were their families.How did they feel about religion? The slave owners attempted to discourage the slaves from worshiping god or any religion. They would tell the slaves that they were no better than animals. That when they died they were gone. There was no heaven for them, so it was no use in praying. Regardless of the all the nonsense the white were feeding the slaves. They believed full hearted that God was a part of their souls. Some believed that the Lord would someday set them free. Countless prayers, and hymns evolved from this deep spiritual belief. How did they feel about freedom? This word freedom is one of the most powerful words ever spoken during this time. The drive to achieve freedom was on every slaves mind. They dreamed about the day they could be of free mind and body. An entire race of people fought for this right. Many attempted to runaway and hide, putting there lives in danger, risking everything in order to achieve freedom. They were willing to die to be free.How did slaves feel about themselves? In spite of the physical and emotional abuse most of the slave had a very positive and respectful belief of themselves. Their desire to do right and be free kept them close to God and their families.
