acked in 1938. This was known as Crystal Night. It took place after a Jew in Paris murdered a Nazi. From early 1939 Jews were banned from owning businesses and were forced to wear a yellow Star of David on their clothing. In January 1942 the Nazis decided finally to set up Extermination Camps. There intentions were to murder all of the Jews in Europe. Altogether between 6 million and 12 million Jews died. This mass murder has become known as the Holocaust, the Hebrew word for sacrifice. This is one of the worst examples of State Terrorism ever. The crimes against the people were disgusting. (Terrorism: From Robespierre to Arafat, Pg 203)In the latter half of the 20th century acts of terrorism multiplied, driven by fierce nationalism and aided by technological advances in transportation, communications, microelectronics, and explosives. The Arab-Israeli conflict is responsible for some of the worst terrorist acts ever committed. In 1948 the United Nations organization decided that Palestine should be divided, Israel for the Jews, and Palestine for the Arabs. The main reason for this was the sympathy for the Jews. Millions of them had been slaughtered in World War 2. With the creation of the two states, and the war in 1967 where the Israelis gained further ground, many Arabs were left without a home and without a job. This caused much anger within the Arabic Nation. (Terrorism, pg 30)Like the I.R.A., the Palestinian terrorists are motivated by nationalism. The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was founded in 1964 and was headed by Yasser Arafat. Its aim was to fight for a homeland for the Palestinians. They saw Israel as their hated enemy. They believed that anything, even murder, was justified if its intentions were to destroy Israel in order to win the Palestinian state.
