The Civil War1

The Civil War would have been fought with or without the issue of slavery because angry southern states began to secede. The South formed its own army and constitution, which was almost identical to that of the United States. It later attacked Fort Sumter. This event spurred Lincoln’s retaliation on the South, leading to the Civil War.Tension began between the North and South when the issue of slavery abolition came into view. The North’s economy was not based on slavery, while the South’s economy was highly dependent on it. Neither side could agree with the other, so sectionalism began to develop in the South. The Northern states began to declare themselves free states. With the tension increasing, the North and South began to dislike each other more and more. The election of a new president came near and Lincoln was elected for the position. The Southern states knew he wanted slavery abolished and were upset by him being elected. They decided it was time to start their own countries with their own laws. One by one, the southern states began to secede. Lincoln would not tolerate the secession, so he fought the war to keep the country unified. Slavery was a large contributor to the cause of the war, but if the Southern states hadn’t begun to secede, weakening the country, the issue may have been settled. Concluding this paper, the war was partly a struggle to preserve the Union....
