Longstreet arrived and after considering the position of the south he suggested to Lee that they should back off, take the second hill, and wait for the Union army to attack them. Lee on the other hand wanted to keep pushing the enemy back and off the first hill. Eventually the rebel army did nothing and left the Union on the hill. Rodes, Ewell, and Early told Lee that they did not attack because their troops were very tired and needed to rest. They had been marching the full day before, fighting that day, and needed to rest. Lee was disturbed by these actions but for now had to wait till the next day to form an attack. Thursday, July 2nd, 1863 He hath loosed the fateful lightning…On this day Chamberlain was very fascinated by the sight of a black man. He had rarely seen a black man, and was very intrigued by him. The man was wounded and needed attention, which Chamberlain ordered to be given. Chamberlain told Kilrain a story of a southern professor who once said “…’ Suppose I kept a fine stallion in one of my fields, and suddenly one of your Northern abolitionists came up and insisted I should free it. Well sir, I would not be more astonished. I feel exactly that way about my blacks, and I resent your lack of knowledge sir.’ “ This was a response to try and make Chamberlain see the way the southerners feel about abolition. General Lee had all the men he needed to go ahead and attack the Union army. With the support of Longstreet, Lee set up the plan for attack that would include all his men besides Heth’s group. The attack would be very well planned, hitting the Union army from different directions. Lee believed this battle to be the taking of the hill from the Union. He had all the army lined ...
