This was a time when people were uneasy and looking for some kind of identity for themselves. Additionally, the loss of human faith and reason led to a new interest in religion. People wanted to know exactly why was the first world war fought? After the first world war, modern philosophy looked farther into that question by stating that, all humans were bad and evil and that there could not be a God because no God would allow such violence to occur. On the other hand, many people such as the existentialist, argued that all humans had choices and they were the ones who choose to kill other humans. Many people were still looking for answers to their many questions on life. People began to look at science to answer their questions shortly after the discovery of the atom bomb and a more in depth study of physics. Many philosophers such as Fraud, believed that human behavior was irrational and their behavior was a product of their instincts and control of moral values and rational thinking. By 1910, Freudian psychology became a national movement because it allowed its followers to stop their old way of thinking. They were to develop and new way of thinking based on optimism and the rational and on going nature of the human mind. The general intellectual surrounding of pessimism in literature, many great novelists during the twentieth century developed new ways to express their current realities of life. Some of the greatest novelists arouse during the twentieth century such as: William Faulkner, Virginia Wolf, James Joyce, Oswald Spengler and George Orwell. Most of these authors focused on reality by focusing on the individual rather than society and on psychology and thus rejecting the idea of progress. The war had certainly affected everything. In addition to literature, there was harmony of the arts. There was constant experiment in art and music and constant rejection of old forms and values. Although many people saw this new form as art as strange, this modern era is probably one of the greatest artistic eras. Conservative music came to a halt and the intervention of movies and radio started to boom as people became ever more interested in these new inventions and ideas. The twentieth century also marked the end of a dream of peace. In 1925 to late 1929, peace might have happened but in 1930, this dream was no longer in reach. France wanted retribution for the damages the war had caused and this was why they could never reach peace. France felt that because most of the war had taken place in Germany, they should not have to pay for the damages, Germany should. In addition to France's dissatisfaction with the Germans, Great Britain was not on good terms with Germany as well, which also created problems for peace. Meanwhile, the Americans were trying to help the Germans pay of their debt, by lending them money so they could pay off France and Great Britain. In return, France and Great Britain would send the money back to America to pay off the rest of the debts. Bibliography: Word Count: 542
