knew that he would be outnumbered by the Europeans, however he attempted to maintain hope alive through the upcoming winter at which time the French would most likely get sick from allergies and would not be able to attack. After a little while, the French had one-quarter of the troops in the hospital sick. Toussaint attempted to negotiate a treaty with Leclerc after Toussaint himself had denied numerous attempts to make a settlement. Toussaint was lured into a conference with Brunet, a French general, where Toussaint was arrested on the spot and shipped back to France. Toussaint was then thrown in jail and left to "die of consumption in an isolated prison cell high in the French Alps"(Fick 212). After Toussaint's death, Leclerc ordered all of the black leaders to be deported. However, later on this year, as Toussaint foresaw, epidemics of fever broke-out. Had Toussaint been able to survive up until this stage rather than attempting to negotiate, he would have had a great advantage in his dreams of clearing all the Europeans out. However there were rebels once again against the French control. In favor of the rebels, famine began to take a toll on the French. They were without money, without medical attention for the fever, and without food. Eventually France was forced to open the doors to the black market women who exchanged fruits and vegetables for gun powder. These ladies then carried it back hiding it under their dresses to the rebel camps. It was now becoming evident to the French that they were losing the war. General Brunet wrote,"The rebels become more insolent by the day. I pursue them from time to time, but it is useless"(Fick 235). It was evident now that the blacks were going to win the war. "[t]he defeat of the French was a matter of course"(Fick 236). The French name of Saint Domingue was destroyed forever and there arose a new nation, Haiti, as well as a new foundation of its independence.In conclus...
