o meet the meek demands of the slaves. Polverel marched to the mountains and murdered all the old, women and children he found and then celebrated the event as a victory. The slaves who had retreated to the Platons awaited for the next chance to attack.Hyacinthe, a 22 year old voodoo priest, lead a time of calm that followed. However he incited some insurrections for his own personal gain. France had replaced Blanchelande with Galbaud who quickly antagonized Rigaud and Pinchinat, colonists in charge at that time of the south, left in control and Galbaud dismissed them and shipped them to France. The ship, however, had another contingent of colonists who were political prisoners from the South, and the colonists convinced the ship sailors to go back. The sailors made an accord with Galbaud's brother and the other colonists on the ship attacking Polverel forcing him to flee. Le Cap had now over ten thousand slaves armed and the city was at war under the protection of the armies from Spain. The civil commissioners granted freedom to every slave that would fight to defend the interests of France. Pierrot a slave leader took the oath fought and forced Galbaud to flee. The war between Spain and France had broken out in March of 1793, and although the slave leader Toussaint had made an alliance with Spain, his allegiance was with France. The majority of whites had also joined Spain. Sonthonax another commissioner from France then declared the end of slavery in the North. The slaves and the remaining whites were now fighting on the same side for France with different interests at stake under circumstances created by the slaves. Similar declarations were made to the blacks in the South but in stages gaving liberty to the slaves that fought for France. However, the conditions were to enlist and fight for France and those who could not or did not (women and children) had to return to the plantations to begin agriculture. The black slaves ...
