Castro wanted nothing to do with the US. He turned to the Soviet Union, with Khrushchev as their leader. Khrushchev was elated with Castro’s offer of friend ship. Not because of who he was but because of where he was. Cuba is located not far off the southern US coast. Close enough for nuclear weapons to be launched against the US.
