In order to be heard and taken seriously in modern day society, one must come up with an extremely effective plan to shock and catch the attention of other citizens. Lucretia C. Mott took such a stand in 1848 as she used the format in the Declaration of Independence to declare her opinion on matters regarding women’s rights. She effectively points out what men have withheld from women in life and then suggests a resolution to the problems. “Woman is man’s equal – was intended to be so by the Creator, and the highest good of race demands that she should be recognized as such.” Moot claims further that the higher being created both genders equal, so that is how they should be looked upon as. In denying women equal opportunities, man is defying God’s word. A report made by Mr. Foote, from the Judiciary Committee, completely differs from the opinion made by Lucretia Mott. The Judiciary Committee believed that the Women’s Rights movement was just a big joke that brought about laughter. Foote states that women already hold too many rights as it is, without adding even more. “They have the best seats in cars, carriages, and sleighs,” and “A lady’s dress cost three times as much as that of a gentlemen.” Mr. Foote and the rest of these gentlemen did not take women’s rights seriously and turned the issue into comedic entertainment for men. Orestes Brownson had a parallel opinion of Mr. Foote as he examined the “feminine character” with a report. “Woman was created to be a wife and a mother; that is her destiny”, said Brownson. He continues by pointing out several things that would destroy he world if women had rights. Brownson ends his report with a rather harsh reference that reads, “—women need a head, and the restraint of a father, husband, or the priest of God.” In other words, he was saying that women have no brain and need guidance from men. They should be treated like slaves and obey their “master.” Women’s rights have progressed tremendously since the movement first began. The movement will continue to progress in society and won’t stop progressing until women are seen as equals to that of men and there is a female president sitting in the oval office of the White House. Women will continue to fight for equal rights just as some men will continue to have jokester attitudes toward women’s rights. Be prepared for the journey to continue, though, as women fight and struggle through the complex diversity of the Women’s Rights movement. Bibliography: Word Count: 533
