The Comanche have most recently been found in the Southern Plains, which stretches from Nebraska to the northern part of Texas. They were fully in Texas by the 1700s. It is believed that the Comanche derived from the Shoshone Indians, found in Wyoming. The language spoken by the Comanche is actually a form of Uto-Aztecan language that when compared to the Shoshone language, the two are very similar. The Comanches were great warriors and did not really indulge in religious practices too much nor did they use folktales or legends very often. The Comanches economy was mostly based on their lifestyle. Comanches were bands, not tribes, who would raid neighboring villages. This is one of the reasons why the Comanche were so difficult to defeat. The Comanche Would raid villages and steal many goods, but most importantly they would steal people. After stealing a person, the Comanche would hold almost like a fair and sell back the stolen person for a hefty ransom. This made the Comanche one of the earliest Indian groups to have money. The Comanche were also known for trading. Even though the Comanche traded goods that were stolen, they still managed to trade with other Indian groups and even trade with the Spanish. Each band of Comanche would actually have a leader skilled in trading, who would know how to speak Spanish, French and about four or five other Indian languages.The Comanche Indians were a nomadic group, which came from Wyoming. They lived in lightweight tee pees that were easily transportable. The men were the hunters of buffalo and elk while the women were in charge of gathering other food, and maintaining a tidy tee pee. Whenever it was time for a Comanche band to leave, it was always the woman who took down and put up the tee pee. The Comanche consisted of up to about 12 bands at one time.
