Many new industries and inventions developed after the Civil War dramatically changing how the United states did business. Inventions where the hallmark of the period. Therewere 13,000 each year during the 1870s and in the next twenty years there was an annualtotal of 21,00 inventions.In 1877 Thomas Edison invented the phonograph, in 1879 the incandescent lampin 1882 he invented the electric light and adapted the electric street car of use in the U.S.,and in 1891 receives the first radio patent in the U.S.. Thomas Edison also developed thefirst electric company in the U.S.. In 1880 George Eastman developed the first successfulrole of film and he soon perfected the Kodak hand camera. In 1867 Alexander Bellinvented the telephone and the following year he and Watson organized Bell TelephoneCompany. In 1885 American Telephone and Telegraph organized AT&T. Otherinventions include: the typewriter in 1878, the cash register in 1879, and the linotype(press) in 1886. Even with all these new inventions it was not only inventors who had agreat impact on industry after the Civil War. In the 1870s the Bessemer Process, the process of blowing cold air over moltensteel to strengthen it, enabled Andrew Carnegie to increase the production of steel as wellas, become one of the first robber barons. J. P. Morgan owned the largest banking firm inAmerica and bought Carnegie Steel from Andrew Carnegie which was developed intoU.S. Steel in 1901. U.S. Steel became the first million dollar company in the U.S.. JohnD. Rockefeller was also a very successful robber baron, his fortune was made from oil. Standard Oil controlled 90% to 95% of U.S. oil at its high point. Also in the 1870sCornelius Vanderbuilt was a power to be reckoned with. He was the corporate powerbehind the countries railroads.
