Next, they were all sent to work. Reflecting on thesituationElie said, "If I was sent to the crematory I would have run straight forthe fence and jumped on it (Wiesel 39)." The fences were electrical andanyone who touched it would be shocked to death. He felt that if he was goingto die it would not be at the hands of the Nazis. He would be able to rest inpeace if he killed himself rather then having some Nazi kill him. Every day,they had to face the guards of the camp, who were mostly so cruel to the Jews,but some of the Nazi's were nice and tried to befriend the Jews, butthose who were lenient towards the Jews were executed by being hung. The Jewswere given very little food and very little time to rest. Each week they hadone day off and that would be on Sunday, on that day they could do almostwhatever they wanted. They were even treated a little better by receiving anextra portion of food or bread that is all the Jews were served. Because ofthese conditions the older Jews began to die because their bodies we not ableto fight the hunger and the harsh winters they faced with the little clothingthey were issued. Elie was young and was able to withstand rougher conditionsthen most of the others in the concentration camps. He also had a littlesomething else; he would not give in to hunger and the bitter coldness becausehe would not leave his father there by himself. They both used each other asmotivation to keep themselves living. Elie looked in his father's eyesand knew the harsh conditions were taking its toll on his father.
