s Land". Many of the soldiers were men drafted from a countries population. England drafted fifty-three percent of its male population to fight in the war. The soldiers of World War I were not the professional, highly trained soldiers from prior wars. The soldiers were in experienced. When fighting, they stayed in the trenches until they were told to forward across a "No Man's Land" in an attempt to take on the enemy's line.The civilians were affected greatly by the world war. War would be a tremendous cost to not only the civilians, but to soldiers as well. Governments from all sides took steps to get food, materials, and ammunition to its soldiers. Governments rationed goods to provide for troops which are more important then the civilians because they are fighting for their homeland. England and Germany especially, took control over all raw materials, privately owned production facilities, and civilian labor.Knowing that civilian morale might break, the government realized they would not be able to maintain war effects for so long. Having this in mind, government took over public and news opinions, at every expense of citizens' rights. This went as far as censoring the press, using propaganda to maintain civilian morale, and placed civilians under arrest. Civilians had some times in the war too. Surface fleets set up blockades and submarine attacks on shipping slowed war production. It also destroyed civilian morale by cutting off shipments of raw materials and food to enemy countries. Some of the new weapon devices put civilians in great harm. Bombs were dropped on enemy's cities and long-range artillery rained shells on population centers miles from battlefronts. Even though the civilians were not fighting in the war, they were fighting for themselves. They suffered in their own way because they did not get the materials and food that they needed.
