Human Sexuality
The Meaning of Sexuality
The Meaning of Sexuality In today’s society things are being expressed and experienced at younger ages, than ever before in our time. Children and teenagers are discovering their sexuality at very early ages. Sexuality is the discovering of who you are and what makes you different from everybody else. Basically, discovering and accepting your sexuality is the gateway to adulthood.. Sexuality is the most profound meeting place of nature and culture. (Bordo 1) Sexuality permits us to be honest with ourselves and the people around us. Teenage sexuality involves many things, such as, the actual definition of sex, what factors influence teen attitudes, the information teenagers should know, the effects of society, alternative sexuality, and difference in genders. What is sex and sexuality, and how would I define it? Sex seems to be a subject that society is becoming a little less shy to talk about. It should be an openly topic we could talk about, yes it is a personal act, but many young people have questions and wonders about sex. Sex is the act of two people engaging in sexual intercourse. That is my definition of sex, but sex has different definitions and meanings depending on who the person is. Sexuality as I stated above, is the discovering your identity, figuring out who you are. Sexuality consist of procreation, love, pleasure, and indentity. (Laack 1) Sex and sexuality are closley realated to each other, you get one with the other. Sexuality is a state of confusion for many teenagers they not sure about what is going on with their emotion, their hormones are flying in every direction possible. Another thing we should discuss about things that are common among teenagers, is masturbation, it’s a regular sexual expression during childhood. This is an awkard subject for many people to discuss, it’s a very personal and could be embarassing act. A survey showed on the average a male masturbates five times per week. Statitistics show that all males masturbate and four out of five females masturbate. Masturbation is a solution for sexual tension and self-stimulation. Some sex therapist believe tha tpeople who don not masturbate during adolexcence may be missing an important element in their sexual development. Also, sexuality is closey tied in with religion, morality, and culture. These three things are important aspects of a person’s life. So, in that case sexuality is a big deal, because it is hard enough to be a teenager without the worries about sex and fantasies. There are many things that influence a person’s sexuality, ecspecially teenagers. This is correct because teenagers, want so badly to fit in. They want to be the in crowd not the out crowd. We the society is in the middle of major changes, people are starting to see the world differently and what we use to see as reality, is no longer what the younger generation is seeing as reality. Reality has changed because sex is no longer seen as just the “cool”, thing to do, but has almost come to be understood as a rite of passage To teenagers it seems as when they become sexually active, then they have become an actual member of society. I believe television is one of the main causes for the change in society. Television is a twenty-four hours activity, that brain washes teenagers perspectives on how they should look and act. T.V. shows sexual images of men and women’s bodies, that are absolutely perfect. The media advertises sex as the “cool” thing to do, it is highly over dramatized sex and fills teenagers with excotic fanaties. Images that they come up with don’t just imprint themselves on us as though we were blank slates ready to be manipulated. These images are created to feed into powerful feelings that already exist. Insecurties, fantasies, and fears. (Bordo 1) Television is one of the main factors that influence teenagers sexuality. Another factor of sexual influence, is popular culture. Popular culture is where many teenagers get their ideas about what is attractive, femine, masculine, cool, sexy and romantic. (Bordo 1) As you see popular culture is a big influence, it persuades them to percieve what is acceptable to society. Sex is presented as the thing that makes you a beautiful person, that has an interesting and overwhelming life. Popular culture and media has convinced teenagers that if they refuse sex then you become the outsider. That is what all teenagers fear, being the outsider. That way all these factors of influence are so strongly believed. The other fact of it is, is that the world see our body, it has we present ourselves to the society. People have the need to be loved and desired, this is the main reason why popular culture is so effective on people. There are many factors that convince teenagers of the way they should be, and the truth of it is, they need to know that what they see may not always be what is real. Teenagers need to be informed of information involving sex and they need help answering their questions, they are unsure about. Teens need to be taught about the decisions and consquences they may come with their choices about sex. I know that many teenagers have problems talking to their parent about the subject of sex. When I was younger I felt uncomfortable confronting my parents, I still do, now that I’m own my on I still can’t talk to my parents about it. I realize this is not for all teenagers, but we do need to find an easier way to discuss sex with teens. Teens need to know about birth control, condoms, unwanted pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Birth control and condoms need to be discussed, so if teenagers decide to have sex that they know there are safe methods out there, that they should use. Unwanted pregnancies are something no teenager really wants to face, but it happens quite often and that is something thats hard to accept, but thousands of teenagers do it each year. They don’t get the chance to live their teenage life because they had a child and maybe if someone would of sat down and talk to them, it may have been prevented. STD’s are increasing at a rapid rate in the United States, currently 1/4 of all Americans have a sexually transmitted disease. There are many dangers that go along with STD 90% of the people who have an STD doesn’t even know it. There are three million teenagers that get an STD each year, that equals to 7,000 a day. There are as many as 20 different STD’s, having 50 different strains. These are important to teach because STD’s can be life or death, and if not that extreme can lead to major medical problems. For those wanted kids, you can become sterile, and some these you will have for the rest of your life. Teenagers need to know these facts. People need to discuss these topics with teens and they need to know the facts. It could possibly be the matter of life and death. Young people must acquire a perspective on their sexual urge before they can absorb information on unwatned prrregnancies or STD’s. There are many things teenagers need to be taught about sex and sexuality. Society should be concerned and a little worried, about teens and their choices on sexuality. Teens are facing things at a lot earlier age these days and things aren’t getting discussed that need to be taught to teens. Society is facing some major changes and its hard to say that we are ready for that, much less prepared for it. I honestly believe that teens are going to participate in these activities and there is not many ways we can stop them. Society does need to make an effort on making sure teens know there are safe ways of going about sex, and also they need to know sex is not something they have to do to fit in. It should be the duty of all parents to talk to their kids at earlier ages and inform them what is exaclty is out there. It’s going to be hard for society to accept what is going on among teenagers, but there is no real way I can see how society could to stop teen sex, but all I can see happening is communcating and suggesting ways of the right ways to go about sex. The right way I guess would depend on the morals in your household, society, and religion. Society needs to make sure there is activities available for teenagers, if there are activities available for teens, that would keep them occupied and perhaps take their minds off of sex. There are many things a society should do to respond to sexual activities, but they should all be positive because times are changing. Last society should be a little worried but there is not many solutions that society could do stop the fast changing reality Alternative sexuality, are people who have sexual intrest that are not like majority. This subject is even harder for some teenagers to comprehend, in fact this is hard for many people of society to comprehend. Your probably asking what do I mean when I say alternative sexuality? People have different ways of living life and different ways they choose to get pleasure. These involves homosexuals. Homosexuals choose to have same partner relationship. This is a relatively new thing to people, and many don’t except it. The truth of it is, people just have different desires and wants. Most teens will experiment first with same sex partners before actually calling themselves homosexuals. Homosexuality is hard because it makes them a part of the minority and they don’t fit in. Teens that are suspected of being homosexual usually get abused by others, either phsically and verbally. Teens who feel as if they have these feelings, usually have no idea why, and have no one to talk to it about to. Most teens have little or wrong information about homosexuals, and what it actually means. I believe the world needs to begin to become more opened to homosexuality, because in all reality it is going on and it’s not going to go away. We may not all understand it and want to be around it, but who are we to put limits on people’s happiness. Men and women are very different, especially when it comes to sexuality. They have different feelings and emotions. Gender role expectations influence a huge impact on our sexuality. Gender roles refer to how a person behaves as male or female, we close to masculine or femine, which are chararestics that yourself or other notice. Boys and girls have always been treated differently. Males are treated more as the tough one, with no emotions, and females as the one’s whoe were emotional and needed to more attention.
