The disease can affect the vagina, urethra, and bladder and causes more irritation than damage. Both men and women may be infected with trichomoniasis, but many people who are infected with the disease often have no symptoms at all. The symptoms that do occur with women include: unusual and increased vaginal discharge, which can be bubbly, pale green, or gray, with an unpleasant odor; discomfort during intercourse and urination; and itching, burning, or redness of the vulva and vagina. The symptoms for men include: irritation inside the penis, mild discharge, or slight burning after urination or ejaculation. Trichomoniasis is caused by the single-celled protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis, which thrive in warm, moist areas. The most common site of infection in women is the vagina, and the urethra is the most common site of infection in men. Trichomoniasis can usually be treated and cured with the prescription drug metronidazole given by mouth in a single dose. This treatment can cause side effects such as mild nausea, vomiting, and metallic taste in the mouth. The symptoms of trichomoniasis in infected men may disappear within a few weeks without treatment. An infected man can continue to infect a female partner until he has been treated. So, it is equally as important to make sure sexual partners also receive treatment in order to prevent getting the infection again The treatment only works if the medication is taken as prescribed. It can also cause a bad reaction when mixed with alcohol; avoid drinking until 24 hours after you finished taking the medicine. It should not be used during early pregnancy. Avoid having sex while being treated to reduce the chances of getting the infection again or transmitting it to someone else.
