Many say that he revolutionized the study of Topology in 2 and 3 dimensions. Topology is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as ‘(1): a branch of mathematics concerned with those properties of geometric configurations....’ He earned his doctorate in 1972 for a thesis which showed the existence of compact leaves in foliations of 3-dimensional manifolds. The thesis was entitled ‘Foliations of 3-manifolds which are cicle bundles.’ Mr. Thurston’s achievements have been recognized over the years by his peers. The Oswald Veblen Geometry Prize of the American Mathematical Society was given to him in 1976 for his work on foliations. In 1979 he became only the second mathematician to receive the prestigious Alan T Waterman Award. He was also the recipient of the Field’s Medal in 1982 and in 1989 was an AMS Colloquium Lecturer.
