It is an increased growth of the basal layer of the epidermis. The patches are most commonly found on forearms, knees, legs, and on the scalp. Psoriasis is not contagious or infectious. The cause is unknown, but it is thought to be inherited and caused by a abnormality in a body’s immune system. - Red patches covered with silvery scales - Occur on the elbow, knees, scalp, or near buttocks - Many dime-sized or smaller patches that suddenly develop, simultaneously - Found in young people who had strep throat or viral upper-respiratory infection. 50% of psoriasis sufferers also have fingernail abnormalities - Physical examination by a health-care provider - Biopsy (to rule out other skin disorders) The treatment varies depending on the severity and type of psoriasis For stubborn patches on the hands and feet - Calcipotrine (to slow production of scales) Using UV lights or “light treatments” for widespread psoriasis. It maybe used in combination with tar or oral medication to improve the effectiveness of the treatment. Treatment For Severe Psoriasis Involving Large Areas Of The Body- These treatments are very potent and may have some severe side effects involving kidneys, blood, or liver, use should be carefully monitored.
