In addition to general public interest in issues related to adolescent abortion, psychologists have a special interest in the problem for several reasons. First, the Supreme court has emphasized psychological factors in deciding cases on abortion by minors. Psychologists can assist courts and legislatures in evaluating the validity of psychological assumptions to determine whether any compelling basis exists for age-based regulation of womens access to abortion. Similarly, psychologists can evaluate procedures to ensure that these procedures enhance support for pregnant adolescents and do not add undue stress or create unintended negative effects.
