Abortion5
Abortion5 The Ethics Of Abortion is a very controversial subject that has been continually argued over for the past few years and probably many more years to come. The main controversy is should abortion remain legalized? Before we get into the many sides of abortion we must first define abortion. Abortion is the destruction of the fetus or unborn child while the child is still in the mother’s womb. This can be done by almost anyone from the mother herself to back alley abortions and even to abortions by clinics set up especially for this purpose. There are two sides to this abortion topic, the PRO-LIFE, which is those who are against abortion altogether and the PRO- CHOICE or those who believe it is the woman’s right to choose if she wants to have an abortion. These two sides offer different solutions to the same problem. The pro-life solution is to have the child and basically live with it. They believe abortion is not an answer. The pro-choice solution is abortion because of reasons they feel are appropriate. Although pro-life people believe abortion is morally and ethically wrong, shouldn’t it at least be legal for victims of rape or incest who have no other alternative? There is no real answer to this controversy; there are two sides to it, which usually is one extreme or the other, no in betweens. I come on the Pro-Choice side. Some women find themselves with an unplanned pregnancy rather than an uncontrolled one. Unplanned in fact, that a contraceptive failed, or maybe they just didn’t use one at all. An uncontrolled pregnancy in the sense of factors being greater than limited contraception. If a woman is raped, and the outcome incurs pregnancy, then abortion should be an alternate form of controlling the unwanted pregnancy. Abortion should stand as only the woman’s choice, women should be the sole determinate in deciding if they are capable or wanting a full term pregnancy. This also will bring out the chauvinistic side of me but I also feel the woman is more responsible for providing birth control. If a pregnancy occurs because of rape and the woman was not allowed to abort it then I feel that numerous lives would be affected. The woman who has this child would feel the emotional and possibly the physical scars for the rest of her life. This would be carried on to the child and probably onto any future relationships and future children she might have. Every one is not the same, some women might be able to handle the situation with little difficulty and some might have great difficulty. I believe this is the main reason to be Pro- Choice. Now lets talk about the other reasons why abortion should remain legalized. I feel if a woman is pregnant for any reason and she does not want the child or to go full term, then abortion should be there as an option. If it is not an option then women would find a way to abort on their own, which would be very unsafe to her own welfare. The old coat hangar trick or throwing yourself down a flight of stairs should not be an option because there are no other alternatives available. Anyway, If the pregnancy is made to go full term because of these Pro- Lifers, then I feel many of these babies will be born into families that not only doesn’t want to care for them but can’t care for them. Maybe they can’t afford a baby, or aren’t mature enough or maybe addicted to drugs. If a child is born into this type of an atmosphere, then the chances that his or her life would be very painful are high. People say that there are studies that prove the unborn child in the fetus feels pain in the abortion process. Even if this is true, I think that the pain an unborn child goes through during an abortion is very miniscule compared to the pain that child will endure during its life if it is born into a family that doesn’t want the child or worse yet, is not fit to care for the child. From day one when the child gets diaper rash because the unfit parents did not change its diaper, or the hunger pains from when the parents did not have enough money for food because they spent their money on drugs all the way to the emotional pains that the future generations of this unwanted child, effects will be felt because of the selfishness of not aborting. In other words, in an abortion, the pain will last a couple of seconds, whereas a diaper rash might last a couple of days, physical pain could last weeks and emotional pain can last a lifetime, not counting the pain inflicted on others along the way. Selfishness, both sides claim this as a part of their cause. The pro-lifers say that you would be selfish because people would not want to sacrifice their lifestyle to be burdened by an unplanned baby. While this might be true, I still go back to the fact that this child would not be wanted and therefore pay the penalty, which will probably be very painful. I find little fault with the pro- choice position other than I feel it is wrong for people to use it as just a form of birth control. Unfortunately there are many immature people who will use it as just that. Now the pro-life position has somewhat different ideas. The most popular of these are: The unborn entity is fully human from the moment of conception. Abortion results in the intentional death of the unborn entity. Therefore, abortion can be defined as the intentional killing of a human being. This killing in most cases would be unjustified, since the unborn human being has a full right to life. If, however, there is a high probability that a woman's pregnancy would result in her death (such as tubal pregnancy, for example), then abortion would be justified. They feel that it is a greater good that one human should live (the mother) rather than two die (the mother and her child). So, in such cases the intent is not to kill the unborn but to save the life of the mother. With the exception of such cases, abortion is an act in which an innocent human being is intentionally killed; therefore, abortion should be made illegal, as are all other such acts of killing. As we are going over in this class, I am realizing that there are some people who see absolutely no reason ever to kill another human being, but that would be another topic. In closing, I wanted to write about the legal part of abortions. In 1973, the Supreme Court declared that, except under certain conditions, states couldn’t prohibit a woman’s right to have an abortion during the first six months of pregnancy. This decision affected thirty-one states’ antiabortion laws. It all began in 1970 when a Texan waitress challenged a state law that made abortion a criminal offense. A woman calling herself “Jane Roe”, who was the plaintiff, was denied an abortion under the law and she sued Dallas County District Attorney Henry Wade, the defendant. The Supreme Court ruled that the Texas law violated a woman’s right to privacy, which was protected by the 14th Amendment to the Constitution and by several parts of the Bill of Rights. The 14th Amendment in the Constitution states that no State shall deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law. Depriving them of an abortion would be depriving them of possible life and property (if you consider an unborn baby property of the mother). The court said that states couldn’t interfere with a woman’s decision to have an abortion. It also ruled that states may regulate abortions during the second trimester only to protect a woman’s health. This case had a great effect on more than half of the United States. This case was and is very important to society today. More and more women are getting abortions because they are safer to do along with being in the best interest of the unborn child. I feel if the outcome of this case had been any different the world would be a very different place. If abortion had been totally outlawed then many people would give themselves abortions, even killing themselves in the act. The population would be in a dramatic increase right now and in the future the world would be very overly populated. In the far, far future if no one was allowed abortions there would be many unwanted babies, which would be unhappy babies. These unhappy babies would be causing many unhappy lives throughout their lives. Sure, there are probably many children who were born to people who didn’t want them, and their lives turned out fine, but without hard data to prove it, I would be willing to bet there are many more people whose lives were miserable!
