In June 1968 Warhol was shot three times in the chest by Factory groupie, Valerie Solanas, a militant feminist and author of the "S.C.U.M. (Society for cutting up men). Andy was rushed to a hospital and was at one point pronounced clinically dead. Seriously wounded, Warhol struggled for his life, but made a gradual recovery.Valerie Solanas, who had appeared in the Warhol movie "I, a Man", shot Andy, because she felt he ignored her. She turned herself in the same night and spent 3 years in prison.In 1977 the Museum of American Folk Art in New York showed an exhibition of Warhol's private collection of American folk art under the title Andy Warhol's Folk and Funk. It was a exhibition of paintings by Andy Warhol, which covered the period 1962-1976. In 1980 Andy returned to a subject which was close to his heart, The Diamond Dust Shoes series. In 1987 he underwent an operation on his gall bladder and died shortly afterwards. A memorial mass was held and speakers included John Richardson, the Picasso biographer and art historian, Yoko Ono and Nicholas Love.According to his wishes, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was created in New York to support young artists, museums, exhibitions and other artistic events. Warhol is described as "a true workaholic. His life was art and he was always working".Andy's art, his presence, his films, his simple philosophies were seductive to a large group of people, and still are to this day.
