ntation between Antigoneand Creon comes from the clash of two very different moral positions that already havealmost equal value and importance in Greek society at that time (59). Antigone defiedthe established Greek sentiment regarding laws. By doing this she set herself aboveCreons law, or the state, and claims to know better what is right (Bowra 64). Norwood states it very plainly by saying Antigone standsfor respect to private affection, Creon for respect to the community (60).People in societies of today feel very strongly about such things as respect forfamily members, respect for divine laws, and respect for public leaders and officials. Antigone is a very powerful dramatic masterpiece for this reason. Sophocles wrotesomething that affected people of ancient societies right down to societies of our day. Critic Thomas Allbaugh probably reflects the thoughts of many who read Antigone whenhe says that Antigone offers one possibleand tragic result of the personal and thepolitical converging and conflicting. In this sense, the play has significant relevance tomodern society and offers both an entertaining drama and valuable lesson to thecontemporary reader of the play....
