By focusing on the main staple crops a biotechnology company can make money and help to market another product to compliment the plants. They were content to focus on a few traits that appealed to farmers and that in some cases helped sell other products Monsanto's Roundup being one example.(Fulmer 3) Consumers are not welcoming genetically modified organisms (GMOs) with open arms, study by the Pew Charitable Trusts shows that 75% of U.S. respondents said it was somewhat or very important to them to know whether their food has been genetically altered Many of these people, however, weren't aware that GMOs already are in more than half the products on supermarket shelves.(Fulmer 2) There have been innovations in GMOs but the American consumer has resisted and with good reason after the accidental release of animal feed corn containing a modified corn, with a potential human allergen, was released into the human food supply last year. Innovations in the last decades have produced new and better products but these will not be seen in the US for another decade because of the skepticism of the American consumer. The biotechnology industry was embarrassed last year when genetically engineered animal corn was found in the human food supply. The animal feed contamination was discovered by the Genetically Engineered Food Alert, a coalition of environmental groups that favor tougher biotech regulations.(Raeburn 1) The industry hurt itself by resisting labeling says Raeburn and will continue to do so in the eyes of the consumer.
