to improve the system we use. The execution process definitely has to speed up. While victims families grieve over their loved one buried in the ground, the prisoner has the privilege of hot meals, a bed to sleep in, and even a small chance of having their sentence overturned or commuted. Victims dont get any of that, so why should the prisoner get to enjoy it for so long. There are things I think would increase its effectiveness as a deterrent too. I think that the government should seriously consider making executions public, so that people will be aware that you will be executed for societys most gruesome acts. Unless you really follow the news, you would never know that a person has been executed. Except for cases like Timothy McVeigh, which gained nationwide media coverage, executions arent that big of a deal. In my opinion, the death penalty isnt enough. It will never bring that loved one back to those families that have been broken because of someone elses lack of respect for human life. People that are against the death penalty certainly have valid claims, but I still think the death penalty is very necessary. Without it life without parole would be the maximum penalty, and thats not good enough. For the families that have been victimized, execution is their only taste of revenge. The number of potential murders that are deterred by the threat of a death penalty may never be known, that alone is enough for me to support it. Capital punishment is far from perfect, and sometimes, innocent people are executed, but abuse of the system doesnt justify getting rid of if it. As long as the person convicted of the crime has had due process, Im all for the death penalty....
