Chernobyl

he production of cancerous cells. If we were to receive high doses of radiation, the cells would not be able to repair themselves quick enough and this would lower the persons immune system and create more cells that are abnormal. Most radiation risk estimates are based on cancer rates not from deaths. Unfortunately, cancer is often the start of a path to death. Depleted uranium remains radioactive for literally millions of years. If this substance remains radioactive for millions of years and higher doses of radiation cause cancer, along with many other side affects, then should we not think about the things we are producing? The natural form of radiation is not what causes cancer and deaths; it is the man made portion that is. Why are we continuing to produce these? Chernobyl, Ukraine was the site of the worst nuclear accident in the world. On April 26th, 1986 at 1:23 am, technicians at the Chernobyl Power Plant in the Ukraine (former Soviet Union) allowed the power in the fourth reactor to fall to low levels as part of a controlled experiment, which went wrong. The reactor overheated causing a meltdown of the core. Two explosions blew the top off the reactor building and started a graphite fire releasing clouds of deadly radioactive material into the atmosphere for over 10 days. The people of Chernobyl were exposed to radioactivity 100 times greater than the Hiroshima bomb. Many of the people in Chernobyl had to be evacuated and many later died because of radiation poisoning. Six hundred thousand people were involved with the clean up of the Chernobyl reactor explosion and many of them are now dead or sick. In Ukraine, alone, the radioactive cloud killed 4,229 people. The initial early signs and symptoms of radiation sickness from high doses included diarrhea, vomiting, fever and erythematic symptoms. Many in the surrounding areas experienced this after the accident and some died. It is mainly the long-term affects th...
