world (Arthur Miller, Tragedy and the Common Man). Lomans underlying fear of being displaced is the real tragedy. He wants to do things right, but he has many incidences that haunt him. Consistently throughout the film, he drifts in and out of a dream. He is constantly haunted by memories of his dead brother, who struck it rich in the jungle. Flashbacks of other incidents, such as Biff catching him having an affair, trouble his thoughts. Loman believes this to be part of why Biff is a failure. Miller also said, Tragedy then is the consequence of a mans total compulsion to evaluate himself justly (Miller, Tragedy). This is Lomans flaw. The circumstances in his life and the identity he has created for himself are being affronted by his inner reality to evaluate himself justly. He continually argues with those around him in order to try and keep his personal dignity. Setting aside Lomans tragic flaw, there is a certain amount of hope that he will change. If there is something to bring the element of hope, there also comes the possibility of change, with change comes the conceivable possibility of victory. However, the tragedy is that he does not change. It is his tragic flaw that brings his ultimate fall. His unwillingness to submit passively to the established order and values cause him to die in the hands of his tragic flaws. This film is an interesting character study, which allows the viewer to spy on what would now be considered a dysfunctional family. This was definitely not an uplifting film, but it left me feeling thankful that my life is on track and my goals are achievable. Although it is not a film that I would watch on my own, it was interesting and well performed. The way this film is staged makes it obvious that it was originally a play.
