until leaders in health care can show that there is another alternative that is more merciful (Moroney 3). Until then, Doctors and family members will still have to resort to illegal euthanasia to help their patients and loved ones. Through personal experience, I believe that Euthanasia should be legalized because it is in humane to allow people to continue suffering when they request release by rapid and painless termination of life. Patients frequently suffer agony and pain that is uncontrollable, which I became a witness to about three years ago.In 1998, my grandfather was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and emphazemia. He was diagnosed by the doctors as “terminally ill,” and each day we watched him get worse and suffer more with each breath. He became so frail and skinny he looked almost corpse-like. He first could not walk up the stairs because he couldn’t breathe, then it became so bad that he became bed ridden. Eventually he could barely breathe on his own. He would lay in the hospital bed at times gasping for air, and have to breath with an oxygen machine. The spirited grandfather that I once new had now just longed for death.He screamed in pain daily for drugs and wished that he could just die to end his pain and suffering and rest in peace. Each day was a struggle for him as well as our family. There was nothing we could do. Active euthanasia was not an option, so each day we prayed that god would let him die before he suffered any more. I never would have thought that I would wish for someone that I loved so dearly to die. It didn’t seem morally right. But I realized I didn’t want him to die, I wanted the screaming to stop and I wanted to remember him as the healthy and playful grandfather I grew up with. I didn’t want to see such a good and loving man to suffer the way he had. Three months after his hospitalization the screaming had stopped. His plea for death had final...
