When we read about the local police, it is often about how a civilian was dragged from his/her car and the questioning use of force by the police. We are shown videotapes of police beating civilians, without knowing about or seeing the events that led up to what we are viewing. The media’s one-sided portrayal of police officers has a great impact on how community members will perceive police.Ways to improve the relationship between police and community members can include: 1) training officers on verbal and non verbal communication; 2) police departments can become more visible, hold public rallies, or support television shows exemplifying their own local heroes; 3) since the media can portray law enforcement on any way it chooses, it is wise for law enforcement administrators to establish a meaningful and ongoing working relationship with its representatives.4). Effective community policing has a positive impact on reducing neighborhood crime, helping to reduce fear of crime and enhancing the quality of life in the community. It accomplishes these things by combining the efforts and resources of the police, local government and community members.
